Karma? Bullshit.

My mood is still pretty low, but I'm far from depression, my intelligence is too high for any mental disorders. So I guess I'm pretty ok.

I've been thinking, I'm always thinking, but I cannot find an answer. Just what kind of a person am I? Who/What do I want to be? I don't know.

I hate the rich, I hate the elites, they squander away money and resources callously just to flaunt their wealth. Every resource you use, you are depriving others of it. Many don't even have the chance to fight for it.

And many of the rich and famous, they're just lucky, most of them not even remotely smart.

The world is not fair; there is no such thing as karma. If there is, there will be no rich, no poor, no people dying everywhere.

There is only fact, you are ugly, you are fat, you are poor, they are rich, they have everything.

Dismantle Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000

I realize that my previous post on the Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 has attracted quite a lot of attention across the globe. So I know many people wants to know how to dismantle their mouse, be it to clean it, or just to take a look in side.

So here's a sort-of-step-by-step guide.

Disclaimer: you are dismantling your mouse at your own risk, I shall not be held responsible in anyway if your adventure failed.

You will need:
Philips Head screwdriver
Torx Screwdriver

Before we start, remove the battery cover and batteries from your mouse.

[click on the images to get a bigger picture]

1. Pry open the "Laser logo".

2. Unscrewed the screw underneath with a Torx screwdriver, then pull out the middle strip with the "Microsoft" word.
Edit: I found out (the hard way) that the strip was NOT supposed to be pulled out, you have to try shifting it left and right to lift up the buttons, to get to the screws underneath the buttons.

3. Unscrew the 2 screws at the back.

4. Here's probably where many people (including me) got stuck. Lift up the mouse button, there is 2 screws hidden underneath.

5. Unscrew the 2 screws hidden beneath the buttons, and remove the white cover.

6. Remove the "side plates" on the left and right, lifting them from the back.

7. Unscrew the screws on the circuit board, there are 5 in total, circled red in the picture).

8. Lift up the circuit board with the battery holder, starting from the front as shown in picture.
They are held in place by 2 "catch" on each side (red rectangle in picture), this can be a bit tricky, you can try to rock left to right to get it out.

There, done.

Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX vs Microsoft Notebook Bluetooth Mouse 5000

As you guys know, I have a Microsoft Notebook Bluetooth Mouse 5000, and the middle click button is dying.

So for my replacement, I decided to get the Logitech Anywhere Mouse MX.

Here's a pic of them side by side:

What I really like about this mouse is the hyper fast scrolling and the dark field technology.

The hyper fast scrolling allows you to scroll through a 50 page pdf document in 2-3 seconds, making the middle click quite redundant. Oh by the way, pressing the scroll wheel changes between hyper fast and normal scrolling mode, the middle click button is the one below the scroll wheel (with the 2 window icon).

The dark field technology is incredible, it makes the mouse works anywhere, really. And as logitech has claimed, it works on glass too. Only one surface it failed to work prolly: mirror, just tried it for fun, who uses a mouse on a mirror surface anyways?

The 2 special feature is indeed special and impressive, however, the Anywhere mouse disappoints me in the ergonomics.

Many other reviews mention that the Anywhere Mouse "feels really good in hand" etc. I really beg to differ. Here's why:

1. The 2 sides of the mouse curves outwards.
This is actually very irritating, as when you grip the mouse, your 4th finger and last finger tends to touch the table surface, the curve outwards causes a quite sharp (pokey) edge near the bottom. What you get is a quite noticeable uncomfortable feeling in your 4th and last finger.

The Bluetooth Mouse's sides are curved inwards, it's really superb. Not only there is no sharp edge, the curve inwards accommodates the natural curl of your fingers when you use a "claw grip" on a mouse.

A pic to show what i mean. Notice the red line i drawn on the Anywhere Mouse

2. The mouse is too flat.
The Anywhere mouse doesn't offer any support on your palm. Even though you will not fully rest your palm on this 2 small mice, the support of your palm makes the grip feeling nicer, like holding something.

You can see in this pic (as well as the preceding pic) that Anywhere Mouse is indeed flatter.

3. Too small to be big, too big to be small.
The Anywhere mouse is too small to be comfortable as a full size ergonomic mouse like Razer's Deathadder, Lachesis. However, it's abit too big to be comfortable as a mobile mouse. As mentioned above, "Crawl Grip" usually means your 4th and last fingers are curled inwards, the wider width causes your grip to feel quite awkward, and creates a strain.

The width difference between the Bluetooth mouse and Anywhere mouse is approximately 1cm:

4. Very very heavy mouse
I did a weight measurement for both of the mice:

Anywhere Mouse:
80g without Batteries
130g with 2 AA Batteries
105g with 1 AA Battery

Bluetooth Mouse:
60g without Batteries
84g with 2 AAA Batteries

(Using Sanyo Eneloop AA and AAA battereies)

AA batt has approx 2.5x higher capacity than AAA, so the battery life is obviously higher. Thus, Logitech very "smart-alec-ly" used AA instead of AAA batteries, the weight goes a lot higher.

Conclusion:
In all, the Dark field and Hyper fast scroll is indeed interesting features, however, the ergonomics of the mouse is very very bad, compared to the Microsoft Bluetooth Mouse. The weight and the bad design makes it feel very uncomfortable. You can already feel the strain on your arm just using the Anywhere mouse for just 30 mintues.

On a side note, the design of the Anywhere Mouse is pretty similar to the Razer Orochi, which was the mouse i had before the Microsoft one, and it had the same issues.

Engineers have no life

I was watching this video my friend shown me, and I realized one thing: engineers have no life.

For example:
-We love to optimize stuff, phone, computer, whatever device, you name it, we optimize it, dunno for what.
-We think tech stuff is cool, but seriously, it isn't. Having an iPhone 4 is all that matters, nobody cares if you run custom rom on your android.
-We think that we are smart, but seriously, most of the stuff we know, people don't care.
-Tech knowledge NEVER impress the girls, they make friends with us so they can get free computer repairs etc etc.

And eh, I went back to do my tutorial, and got my calculations all wrong because of a single number. Who else get screwed in the ass by numbers and alphabets?

Engineering: it's a curse, it's a freaking nightmare.

Life Goes On

I didn't get to see that btc girl today. Damn, I even made an effort to reach the bus stop by 8.30. Maybe she was late? Or maybe she decides to skip the morning lectures. Quite disappointing, though I must admit the odds of seeing her today is very slim actually. Anyways, wtf is this? Falling for a-girl-you-met-at-bus-stop-but-don't-even-know. Childish.

Mood is bad, but not as rage as last week, but still have zero motivation to do anything.

I like my new blog banner, cute, and I love cats. One thing it remind me of: keep walking. Life is a linear timeline, no matter what, you have to keep walking. I've always believed that. But what is the purpose of this walk? I've been trying to find out since god knows when. Every life must have a purpose, something to fulfill, your reason for living, and the reason differs for each individual. I have yet to find mine, the thing that is worth fighting for.

For now, time drags me along, with zillions of tutorials to do, and not forgetting the 18 fucking labs this sem. I'm becoming a zombie, no life, no meaning, no purpose.

First week of school

First week of school was bad, really bad. The swirling pool of emo continues on, and my mood keep falling into a bottomless pit of darkness.

School obviously continues to be a crap load of shit. Now just the sight of the Zerg makes me pissed, they should just disappear, burn in a fire, die, anything. Just get out of my sight. To make things worse, as I have foreseen, this semester is really holy shit, gonna take a lot of effort just trying to pass.

Then again, school's the smaller part, as you would have guessed, the main part of the problem is still girls, I'm prolly getting desperate, lol. But seriously, Engin is PATHETIC man. Oh yes by the way, I saw that girl on BTC again! I'd believe (and hope) that she has lesson 9am on wednesday, with luck, I might get to see her every wednesday. I have a very quick judge of character, just by looking at a person's face, I'll know, and I am very seldom wrong. So based on my resonance theory, she is the type I'm looking for. However, the distance between is far far far far far... Friends who like drama suggest that I approach her. C'mon, I'm not retard, I had myself tested, lol.

Anyways, I'm facing an identity crisis, I am very confused. I don't like the person that I am now, but I don't know who I want to be. For a very long time, I am a cao ah beng, I know it, and I sort of like it, because it differentiates me from the typical fucked up undergrads. But it has another problem, nobody takes a joker seriously. I mean sure, as a joker, i tend to be the centre of attention, I like it, but I have to admit, it's the cool, stylo kind of guy who gets the girl, no matter how jerk he is. Being cool is just not in my blood, I can try to act cool, but it's kinda obvious, and it suck. So part of me wants to be the rowdy cao ah beng, another part wants to be a stylo professional kind. And the biggest part of me don't know what I want to be.

Time is a very cruel thing. As I am trapped in the whirlpool, time continues on, work has to be done, exams have to be failed...

The day before school start

I dunno why, but school seem pretty depressing this sem.

Schoolwork?
It's really not the results that I'm concerned with, since my schoolwork's been pretty lousy all along, it doesn't matter anymore. Hmmm. Prolly it's due to the 4 extremely heavy core mods I'm having this sem? I know I shoudn't be, and I can't afford to be this slack in my studies, esp because my mum's paying off for my school fees. I'm really grateful for that, but I don't see to have the motivation and determination, esp when games come into play....

People?
Prolly the issue. Huimin's not in engin anymore, I won't say why. Just to clarify, I do not have feelings for her, and she's attached anyways. It's nice to have a girl for company on the idiotic journey to school everyday, and personally I really like talking to girls, not because I'm a flirt (well I am, but that's not the reason here), it just feels nicer because every single guy have an overflowing ego, they need to win in every conversation (incl me). It's nice to talk to girls, because you talk, they listen, and of course, my ego feels better.
Another problem is friends, I have a pretty decent number of friends in school, but only few are true friends. They can laugh, talk cock, bullshit together, but they don't really care about you, esp when school work is concerned, everyone is hiding something. And like I said before, some people just have to win.
And of course not forgetting that race invading Singapore. That particular race which have high similarity in form and number with the Zerg. Both disgusting/irritating, and without a number to their population.

Girls?
Always an issue, single is damn boring, really. Even though I keep saying how nice it is to be single, that's just a way to comfort myself. I am still bothered by the question my ex-colleague Desmond asked: "阿Joe, 其实你长得也不错leh,为什么到现在都没有女朋友?" I know the answer to that question, but . . .

Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000

One of the biggest problem I have with mice is the stupid rubberish surface on them. The surface just don't last, and after like 1 year or so, it starts to peel off. My mouse is no exception.

I really like Microsoft's mouse, I've tried other mice, Logitech ones, Razer's Deathadder and Orochi, and MS's mice are the most comfortable. The one I have is the MS Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000. Despite the ugly and weird design (and stupid long name), it feels really comfortable in hand, and the weight is just nice (uses 2x AAA), doesn't put any strain on your hand at all.

Our body secretes oil and this naturally occurring oil is actually quite corrosive. It eats up the rubber surface of the mouse, leaving behind a sticky layer, which I think is the adhesive.

And I decided to dissect my mouse...

First, there's obviously no visible screws on the mouse, so I thought the suspicious looking "Laser" logo is probably the key to it... and so I pry it open, and tah dah, the screw is underneath!

The screw is not the usual philips aka + head screw, it's the Torx screw. Well I expected that already, since many electronics uses that. And I have the Torx screwdriver which I bought when I dissected my W810i years ago.

That torx screw frees the middle section with the microsoft word on it, and then I proceed to try to remove the white body, which was unexpectedly tough. Because there are 2 screws hidden underneath the buttons.... Luckily I did not force open the top cover, if not my mouse would really have died...

So we have like this:

Then I removed the screws securing the circuit board to the mouse body, and we have this:

There's really not much space in the mouse, and the majority of the space was taken up by the batteries. Even a simple mouse looks so complicated, I wonder what would I deal with after I graduate.

And so I proceed to clean up the dirt on my mouse. The pain-in-the-ass part was to remove the entire rubber surface. the adhesive was so damn stubborn, and I didn't want to scrap it as it'll leave a lot of scratches. So I used the most ancient method: tape, trying to stick the thing off. It was really stupid.

Long story short, I used a dish sponge in the end. The dish sponge scratched the surface like hell, but the effect turns out nice, as it looks like it has a brushed effect design. lol.

You can't see the "brush" effect, as I use phone camera, not a DSLR, but you can see that torx screw at the back of the mouse.

I spent 6 hours on this freaking "project", but heck, not like I had anything better to do, and I kinda like my "new" mouse :D

*edit 17/08/2012*
I made a step-by-step guide on how to dismantle the  Microsoft Bluetooth Notebook Mouse 5000 here.
